The 48th Consultative Committee Meeting of the Colombo Plan (CCM CP) sparked vibrant discussions and collaboration in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from May 29 to 31, 2024. This eagerly awaited event marked the first face-to-face gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing together 17 member countries and 3 international organizations. Indonesia’s Ministry of State Secretariat led an active role, with the Head of the Bureau for International Technical Cooperation spearheading the Indonesian delegation, alongside representatives from the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Key discussions at the 48th CCM CP revolved around the critical issues of narcotics and illegal drugs, alongside the surge in drug-related crimes. H.E. Enkhbayar Battumur, Mongolia’s Minister of Justice and Home Affairs, called for robust international cooperation to tackle these pressing challenges. Beyond these urgent themes, the meeting evaluated the progress of existing Colombo Plan programs and gathered valuable insights from member countries on future directions.
Indonesia’s significant contributions received widespread acclaim, especially its advocacy for a comprehensive long-term strategy for the Colombo Plan, revitalizing its branding, and fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships. Notably, Indonesia proposed transforming former cannabis farmers into high-quality coffee farmers as a pilot project under the Drug Advisory Program (DAP). The meeting underscored a shared commitment to battling narcotics and enhancing cooperation among Colombo Plan members. Additionally, the Colombo Plan Secretariat announced the formation of a dedicated team to develop the grand strategy suggested by Indonesian delegates.
The official proceedings culminated in a wonderful closing event hosted by the Mongolian government at the Mongol Nomadic Cultural Heritage Center. Delegates were enchanted by traditional Mongolian art performances, an art exhibition, and delightful local cuisine. The breathtaking natural scenery accompanying the performances left delegates with an indelible impression of Mongolia's warm hospitality and rich cultural legacy.
